Counseling Options for Soldiers & Family Members
   

These local Fort Richardson resources are intended to address behavioral health issues such as: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Anger, Stress, Interpersonal Relationships, Marriage Counseling, and Substance Abuse.

On Post Resources:

Peers/Fellow Soldiers – Talk to your friends about what you are feeling.  This often allows a reality check.  First line of defense!

Chain of Command – Team Leaders, Squad Leaders, Platoon Sergeants/Platoon Leaders, 1SGs, and Commanders.

Family Life Chaplains – Each unit has an assigned chaplain or they may utilize the post chapel at 384-5433.  Counseling offered individually or with the couple.

Unit Ministry Teams – especially good counseling by unit peers.

Primary Care Managers – Family Practice Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners may provide some medications to assist with anxiety, depressions, and sleep issues.

Behavioral Health – Soldiers with behavioral health issues can come in Monday—Friday.  Walk-ins seen 0630 – 1500 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday or call for an appointment at 384-0405.  Command referrals are on Wednesday mornings at 0630 and must have a completed USARAK Form 298-E Mental Status Evaluation Request signed by the commander and the soldier.

Family Advocacy Program – For intervention and treatment of spouse abuse and child abuse/neglect call 384-0405.

Army Community Services – Employment readiness, Army Emergency Relief, financial readiness, victim advocacy, lending closet, parenting classes, Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Exceptional Family Member Program, Army Family Team Building Program, wellness workshops, parenting workshops, and New Parent Support Program Home Visitor. Call 384-1517.

Military Family Life Consultants – Counsels to individuals, couples, and families.  Call 384-1534.

Army Substance Abuse Program – Evaluation and treatment for Soldiers with alcohol and/or drug problems at 384-7368.

Military One Source – eight (8) free sessions,
excellent web site at http://www.militaryonesource.com or phone 800-342-9647, staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year, log into their website as “military” and the password is “onesource”.

TRICARE Counseling – TRICARE eligible family members can self refer to a network provider for up to 8 sessions per fiscal year.  An authorization is required for additional sessions beyond the initial 8.  A physicians referral is required if the provider is a behavioral health care counselor, licensed or certified mental health counselor, or a pastoral counselor. Anchorage Vet Program – Treatment for PTSD.  4201 Tudor Center Drive, Suite 115, Anchorage, AK.  Or call 563-6966.  Works with Active Duty Military population.

Local Church Programs – Many Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Social Services, etc. provide outreach, individual and marriage counseling.

Mental Health Resource Line – Phone-in assessment program is for soldiers and family members seeking help for post-traumatic stress or other psychological issues.  Toll-free number for the Telephone Self-Assessment is (877) 877-3647
